Glengarry Glen Ross is a film which depicts two days in the lives of four real estate salesmen and how they become desperate when the corporate office sends a trainer to “motivate” them by announcing that, in one week, all except the top two salesmen will be fired. The title of the film comes from the names of two of the real estate developments being peddled by the salesmen characters: Glengarry Highlands and Glen Ross Farms.
When Blake (played by Alec Baldwin) is sent by Mitch and Murray, the owners of Premiere Properties, to motivate the sales team, he stops Shelley “The Machine” Levene (Jack Lemmon) as he is pouring a cup of coffee for himself. He tells him to put it down because, “Coffee is for closers!”
The now classic phrase is instantly recognizable to fans of the cinema. It’s a popular motivational (or de-motivational) phrase used on various sales and related memes.
